![]() The North West Surrey Samaritans Prison Team The Prison Team is made up of six volunteers who support the young adults on the 'B' Side of Feltham Young Offenders Institution in various ways. The Young Adults are aged between 18-21. The Team's most important role is the running of the Listener Scheme. Young Offenders are trained by the Team, twice a year, to become Listeners. A Listener undergoes similar training to a Samaritan in order that he can support and listen to fellow inmates in times of stress. Everything a Listener is told remains confidential between the Listeners and Samaritans. Inmates also have the option of talking to Samaritans by means of dedicated telephones, which are available on all wings. The Prison Team goes to Feltham every Tuesday to see the Listeners at the weekly off-load. This is an opportunity for on-going training, general discussions and any problems the boys may have, to be raised. The Prison Team involve the Listeners on various projects, such as the production of a new Induction DVD, which promotes the Scheme to young adults when they first come to Feltham. Each month, a Listener joins a member of the Prison Team at the Suicide Prevention meeting with staff, Governors and other outside agencies. It is important that the Prison Team have a good relationship with Prison Staff which is developed over time at various meetings concerned with the welfare of the Young Adults. Other events such as Family Day and The Healthcare Fair, promote the Listener Scheme and further cement relationships with the Prison Officers and inmates and their families. |
